Information ranges from the records of early accounts of the “Berdache” dating to before the Colonial Period of what would become the United States, to the Modern Two-Spirit Movement generally and The Wichita Two-Spirit Society specifically.
Links are provided to original documents whenever possible. This is by no means an exhaustive review of the full history of all tribes in the Americas. Tribal understanding of gender was as varied as the people and languages that spanned North, Central, and South America, we cannot hope to represent them all. This is meant primarily as an introduction to the topic. Please see the Further Reading section for additional books, articles, and information if you’re curious. We will do our best to answer any questions you may have.
